Sew Elegant: New Look 6618
Took a short break between a few of my more complicated May projects to make this dress for an event I attended last week. This dress was just what I needed, it was simple yet elegant, and it only took two days to make. My local hobby lobby expanded its fabric section (slightly), and I am so excited. I came across this techno-crepe fabric, which was in stock in oxblood and black. I went with the oxblood because I have been expanding my wardrobe color palette. This fabric drape and texture is fantastic. It is medium weight, with 5% spandex, a crepe backing, and smooth satin hand.
New Look 6618 is a very light and flowy design. My dress is a combination of two views: View A wrap tie finish, with View C length and sleeveless option. Initially, I wanted this to be View C entirely, but after I baste stitched the straps into place, I realized the fullness in the back wasn't flattering for my figure. I removed my baste stitches and proceeded to finish my dress as instructed for view A. I love the gathered look and who doesn't appreciate being able to make a nice dress without dealing with bust darts. Based on past experiences with New Look patterns, I went with the size 8 instead of the suggested size 12; I knew a 12 would swallow me. I did grade to a 12 from the neck to the armscye through the bust and I graded back to an 8 from the bust to the waist. I paired this dress with my purvista pumps by Jessica Simpson, which I’ve been waiting to wear since spring hit!
