Simplicity 8956: Corduroy skirt

The corduroy takeover continues. I wish I could tell you that I am finished, but I can't make such promises. What I can do is tell you about this look, so let's get to business.

I made the black turtleneck using MimiG Style Georgia pattern. Since this is my third make using this pattern ( see here and here), I think we can officially classify this as a tried and true pattern. For the skirt, I used the same corduroy that I used for my round handbag. The skirt pattern is simplicity 8956; a misses pant and skirt pattern with length variations. I made view D, with minor modifications. I cut a straight size 12, but after basting and testing fit, I graded down at the waist and increased the dart depth. With that being said, I should have cut a 10 at the waist and graded to a 12 in the hips. I had very few issues with the instructions, but I did find the steps for creating the front pleats confusing. I had to rip the seams and sew it again because I did it wrong the first time. Ironically, after I finished the skirt, I realized that I was not too fond of the front tie or pleats.

My minor modification was my hem finish. I used leftover corduroy bias tape to finish my hem, and it's my favorite thing about the skirt. The bias binding really gave the skirt a unique edge! I don't think I will make either skirt view of this pattern again, but I do want to try View A in linen. I was so excited about this make when I planned it, but I think that I will count this as a sewing miss. When I wore it, it just didn't give me that spark of joy like most of my handmades do. For this look, I paired the skirt with my black Jessica Simpson pumps, but I'll wear it again in a few weeks (probably with tennis shoes) to see if it sparks joy. If I'm still not feeling it, I will donate it to goodwill. But never fear, this possible "miss" did not affect my sewjo, and I am full steam ahead and sewing into the New Year.
